Byron Shire Community Core Values
There have been many efforts over the years to develop a set of Community Core Values for the Byron Shire. But none of the past efforts can claim to have been exhaustively inclusive.
Welcome and thank you for your interest and participation in the Core Values Project. It's time to open the door to wide community participation in this very important issue. This issue is important because without a set of accepted core values, the community, as a whole, has no solid foundation upon which to build a sustainable future. Your input is immensely valued as the community comes together to co-create a document that might be truly representative of our shared aspirations and their underlying values within the Byron Shire. The Byron Shire Community Core Values Project has four phases: Creation of a document that begins the process of identifying and collating the values already articulated by the local government, business sector and wider community; Community Engagement in a multi-faceted process of defining our shared values; The resulting document will be a Declaration of the People of the Byron Shire that defines the Core Values of our Community; Using the core values within the Declaration, we may produce a corresponding set of performance indicators by which to evaluate the lifestyle choices made daily by each one of us and hold government and business accountable to the local community and its values. As a result of Brentyn Schubert's leading efforts, the Byron Shire Community Core Values Group was created at the Byron Social Forum in June 2008. Several Byron Shire community members, including Christine Willmot, Ricardo Johansson, Kate Kirkwood and Charles Donaldson (among many others) have assisted Brentyn Schubert in a revision of many previous attempts. The previous attempts included the already-accumulated efforts of various individuals and groups throughout the Byron Shire over the years. However, one cannot say with confidence that the results of any or all of those individuals or groups created and projected the "Will of the People" of the Byron Shire concerning Core Values. With the efforts of the new Symposiums and this new technology that can virtually get everyone into the same room, it may be possible. See the Core Values issue that has already been submmitted on the UP site.
